The first vacation to the beach which I recall from my childhood included a trip to Panama City Beach. I never dreamed that I would one day, return to the beach nearby and call it home. The beach in South Walton has a strong pull on me, just as it has on the tiny particles of quartz which have flowed from the Appalachian Mountains down the river systems and into the Gulf of Mexico, over millions of years, to form what we know today as the Beaches of South Walton and Destin.
After graduating from the University of Georgia, I worked in the private Country Club management before deciding to get out and see the country, by foot! When my body ached from walking about 1500 miles on the Appalachian Trail for several months, followed by exploring nearly every national park west of Colorado, I felt the need to settle down. After briefly living in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, I felt the need to be near water and moved to the beach here in South Walton and quickly called it home. An avid outdoors-man, I feel a great connection to this area, where 40% of the land is state-owned forest and parks. Being in the great outdoors is part of the attraction to this undeveloped area. Some of my community involvement includes volunteering and serving for the Seaside REP Theatre’s Board of Directors, the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (NW Florida College), Florida Lake Watch (University of Florida), as well as assisting Seaside’s Escape to Create. Some of my other serious interests include anything associated with creativity, including photography, drawing, painting, pottery, graphic arts, knitting, and free-lance writing, and of course those now take a backseat to spending time and seeing the world through my children’s eyes.
My interest in real estate began as a young child, when my parents would load us into the car on an occasional Sunday afternoon, and we would ride around looking at property. I’m not sure that we were ever shopping for property, but I have fond memories of those times, exploring real estate. When I moved to South Walton, my primary interest was naturally real estate. Quickly, I connected with many people in our community, and within four years, I ranked in the top 7% of REALTORS® (world-wide) in my international company. Currently, I serve on the Emerald Coast Association of REALTORS® (ECAR) MLS Committee as Chair, and am a member of ECAR, Florida Association of REALTORS®, and National Association of REALTORS®. I am also a graduate of the REALTOR® Institute. As often as possible, I attend Walton County Commissioner meetings to stay informed and try and shape our community. “Recently I started looking for property to purchase to build a home on. I was interested in a certain area but was not knowledgeable of prices and restrictions. The help that Murray gave was tremendous. Not only was he informative of the area I was interested in, but he had answers to all questions. Never once did Murray suggest I look at any properties that he suggested. He would put the info out there and let me decide. It was a very stress-less experience dealing with Murray and in no time, actually a couple of weeks, I decided on the land I wanted and purchased. I would recommend Murray Balkcom in a heart-beat to assist you in finding your new place.” — Bob F
